This tour reflects our own genuine passion for travel in this fabulous country, by immersing yourself in to the country and getting under its surface. It is impossible to do everything that will enable you to see the real Australia, and this Southern section complements our other two longer self drives, all of which require time so plan to come back to try our other biggies!

Day 1 Arrive Sydney and drive to Blue Mountains
Enjoy a 2 nights stay in this beautiful wilderness, with outstanding views.

Day 3  Today, your 5 day self drive journey to Melbourne begins– SYDNEY TO JERVIS BAY
APPROX. 200kms (124 miles)
After collecting your rental vehicle, you depart Sydney and head south to Huskisson, on the shores of the famous Jervis Bay. This historic township is a great location from which to be based for exploring the Jervis Bay Territory and other great areas of the beautiful Shoalhaven.
ACCOMMODATION: JERVIS BAY – 1 NIGHT

DAY 4 - JERVIS BAY TO TILBA TILBA
APPROX. 204km (127 miles)
Head south to Central Tilba, a beautiful National Trust heritage village.
ACCOMMODATION: TILBA TILBA -1 NIGHT

DAY 5 – TILBA TILBA TO GIPSY POINT
APPROX. 193km (120 miles)
As you journey south, you pass through charming fishing villages and National Parks. After crossing the border into Victoria, you continue on to Gipsy Point, a lovely place tucked into the upper reaches of Mallacoota inlet, offering accommodation, bushwalks, brilliant fishing and bird watching.

DAY 6 – GIPSY POINT TO METUNG
APPROX. 218km (136 miles)
After a hearty breakfast, you head south, passing through Lakes Entrance to Metung, the gateway to the Gippsland Lake area. It is worth taking the time to explore this wonderful area.

DAY 7 – METUNG TO MELBOURNE
APPROX. 315km (196 miles)
Leave Metung and drive to Melbourne, a city of crowded markets, open-air cafes, a booming nightlife and sparkling festivals. This city of culture combines old world charm and contemporary living, that is uniquely Australian.
Stay Melbourne for 2 nights

DAY 8 – AT LEISURE IN MELBOURNE

DAY 9 – Today you begin your 10 day self drive to Adelaide, incorporating the Great Ocean Road, Kanagaroo Island, the winelands and much much more
MELBOURNE TO APOLLO BAY
APPROX. 185km (115 miles)
You leave Melbourne and travel southwest to Apollo Bay, with its wide crescent shaped sandy beach, rolling green Otway hills and laid back lifestyle.
ACCOMMODATION: APOLLO BAY – 1 NIGHT

DAY 10 – APOLLO BAY TO PORT FAIRY APPROX. 190km (118 miles)
Today you depart Apollo Bay and continue along the magnificent stretch of Great Ocean Road, where you will see the 12 Apostles, London Bridge, The Bay of Island and Loch Arch Gorge. You continue to the unique fishing village of Port Fairy, one of Victoria’s earliest ports.   Many homes and other buildings of last century have been preserved for you to see.

DAY 11 – PORT FAIRY TO HALLS GAP APPROX. 260kms (162 miles)
Today you head north to Halls Gap and The Grampians National Park, one of the state’s largest and most accessible National Parks.

DAY 13 – HALLS GAP TO COONAWARRA APPROX. 270km (168 miles)
Travel on to Coonawarra, an area known for some of the world’s finest wines. This exceptional region has rich Terra Rossa red soils, the lifeblood for the superior grapes grown here.
ACCOMMODATION: COONAWARRA – 1 NIGHT

DAY 14 – COONAWARRA TO GOOLWA APPROX. 415km (258 miles)
From Coonawarra you head north to Goolwa, at the mouth of the Murray River on Lake Alexandrina.
ACCOMMODATION: GOOLWA – 1 NIGHT

DAY 15 – GOOLWA TO KANGAROO ISLAND APPROX. 80km (50 miles)
Leave Goolwa and head southwest to Cape Jervis. Here you will board the ferry to Penneshaw,  on beautiful Kangaroo Island.
ACCOMMODATION: KANGAROO ISLAND – 2 NIGHTS

DAY 17 – KANGAROO ISLAND
Today you can enjoy a full day at leisure.  Explore the natural beauty of Kangaroo Island, home of many species of Australian wildlife and marvel at this place of outstanding beauty.

DAY 18 – KANGAROO ISLAND – MCLAREN VALE APPROX. 75km (47 miles) plus ferry ride from Penneshaw to Cape Jervis
Return to Cape Jervis and continue your journey to McLaren Vale, home to fantastic wine, food and hospitality. McLaren Vale is the gateway to the stunning Fleurieu Peninsula and also one of Australia’s renowned wine regions, famous for producing some the best wines in the world, and with over 76 cellar doors.
ACCOMMODATION: MCLAREN VALE – 1 NIGHT

DAY 19 – MCLAREN VALE – ADELAIDE APPROX. 41km (26 miles)
From McLaren Vale you head north to Adelaide, a city where the lifestyle is relaxed and the urban landscape highlighted with elegant colonial buildings, museums and galleries.
Return your self-drive vehicle and leave Adelaide or if you choose, continue your stay in this wonderful and much overlooked city

DAY 20 – Today is for relaxing in Adelaide and absorbing all you have experienced over the last amazing 3 weeks
