This alternative self-drive tour of the Red Centre takes you along the Mereenie Loop, instead of driving a normal car along the Stuart Highway. On this tour you venture into Aboriginal owned territory (permit required), and through the MacDonnell Ranges and West MacDonnell National Park, with all its peaks, gorges and chasms. You arrive at Kings Canyon from the North, after an exceptional journey, with 300 miles of rugged, unsurfaced road. This is the real outback and an authentic experience of this vast, empty red wilderness. On joining the surfaced tarmac at Kings Canyon, you can look forward to seeing Uluru and Kata Tjuta. On your return, you have the option of taking the Ernest Giles 4WD track to Alice. Alternatively you can drop your car off at Ayers Rock. This is an amazing trip
